Ready to Make Shabby Chic Furniture Yourself?

via wikipedia
I read some useful sites writing about how to make diy shabby chic furniture from existing or even better unused furniture we have. Well, it’s gonna be a challenge for a newbie diy-er like me. It’s not because I like the style of shabby chic itself, but the reason is I want to make my old and dull table or chair become something different, something new, something great for my room with a small effort.

I don’t say it’s so easy to make your own shabby chic furniture. No. Because it’s not about making the whole process or doing all the diy job from the blank scratch. But… it’s just doing simple thing as easy as a cupcake to re-paint your old unused table or drawer…or whatever furniture you have, actually.

So… here I’m gonna summarize some points I’ve already read from many resources.

  • Prepare your furniture. You can pick your dull wood table, or boring drawers from your room. Or if you want to make unique headboard for bedroom it’s time to create one.
  • Detach the hinges and some metal parts of your furniture. You need to do this to protect the metal parts while re-painting your furniture and the process will be easier.
  • Using sandpaper remove the surface paint of furniture. It will give you nice effect.
  • Then clean the surface of furniture using soft cloth and warm water. Wait until you are sure that it’s dry
  • You need to make sure to dry the furniture, so you can re-paint it easily. Since painting when it is still damp will make the outcome is bad. You need to check the layer even before applying paint.
  • Apply the paint with nice color. Don’t apply to much paint, since shabby chic has only simple tone. Some nice colors of shabby chic can be seen here for your inspiration! : )

  • Leave the furniture for 1 day or more. You can add finishing to the surface with vanish or wax. It’s useful to make your furniture long last. Other alternative, you can create more challenging step of diy work with adding a nice touch of shabby chic style.
  • It is great to make a real shabby chic look by adding accent like worn out or damaged surface. Try to use sandpaper on some areas, like edges  of table, around handle of the drawer, handle of door, or chair legs. Do it gently until you get your favourite accent.
  • Last, add some varnish or wax to protect your furniture.

Voila, you get your shabby chic furniture!

Shabby Chic Decor Trend: Love it or Hate it?

Shabby chic decor trend appears to be growing quickly. I have seen the development of this design in some elements for the interior and exterior of the house. I myself did not really know what's the difference with a rustic design and farm house design. But I see this shabby chic design looks very classic and stylish, particularly adopting French style design. It has a characteristic mix and match items of old vintage stuffs like I used to see at my grandma's house.
